  • System repairs and data recovery
  • Installation and set of antivirus software.

Ways of preventing and removing viruses

We recommend using any antivirus but Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, or BitDefender. They have a tendency of installing too much extra stuff to the computer, clogging your disk space if you try to uninstall them, or if you use an iPhone making it not work with iTunes.
From our experience Node32 does a good antivirus that doesn’t completely mess up your system after you remove it.
Recently we updated our Windows 10 bench computers here and the included antivirus in the anniversary update (1601) is doing a stellar job of keeping the machine safe. Though best practices listed below should still be followed.

Other good software for virus / malware removal is Spybot search and Destroy, Adaware, and Hijackthis!
Windows also comes with a spyware removal tool, Malicious Software Removal Tool Which is constantly updated – if you run Windows update.

Alternatively proactively keeping viruses from getting onto the system is the best way to be virus free.

  • Don’t open attachments from emails if you aren’t expecting it from the person. If you aren’t sure if you were looking for one, ask them about it – it’s not rude
  • Don’t install software from untrusted sources. Generally the Operating System maker and names like Adobe, Google, and Oracle are safe.
  • Keep your computer behind a fire wall and consider using a guest network for people who aren’t commonly in your house but may want to use your internet when they visit. They could have a virus or malware that could spread through the network
  • You’re not invincible because you’re running Mac OS X. As a platform gains market share it is more likely to get a virus.
  • Keep your software up to date. A lot of updates are security updates, and security exploits can’t be used to gain access into a system that doesn’t have the hole, right?

Sometimes software that you randomly pick up from the internet seems good or tempting to install, but sometimes the software is loaded with spyware or adware. One time after installing a program on a computer, we noticed that it started to rapidly give pop ups. You want to avoid that. We offer a service where we will test any questionable programs to see if they yield unwanted results. For more information send us an email at info@techguruhelpdesk.com
